Mythological Sirens to be brought to life from sand

by Doreen Cudnik Cleveland-Sunset at Edgewater Beach will be even more spectacular than usual on August 21 and August 22, as area artists Scott Radke and Sarah Morrison join together to present an exhibition of dance, sculpture and music, titled "Erie Sirens." The free events coincide with Coastweeks '98, a celebration of the nation's waters and shorelines.

Viewers are invited to enjoy a day at the beach while Radke, using only his hands and the occasional seagull feather, brings the image of the Siren to life through his sensuous sand sculptures. According to Greek mythology, Sirens were part bird, part fish and part woman. With sweet, bewitching voices, the Sirens lured mariners to their destruction.

Regular visitors to Edgewater Beach have most likely come across Radke at work, or have seen one of his finished pieces. He's been creating public art exhibits out of sand since two summers ago, when it became too hot to paint and draw in his attic studio in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood. A regular beachcomber, using the natural elements as a medium for his art seemed a perfect fit, and working outdoors helped him overcome feelings of depression.

"Most people when they're depressed go to therapist or to church," Radke said. "I couldn't afford a therapist and I didn't feel like going to church, so I went to the beach instead. It's a spiritual place, a place where you can lose yourself and connect with yourself. I started playing in the sand and the sculptures just came to life from the images in my head."

Scott Radke creates one of his sensuous sand sculptures at Edgewater Beach.

Like angels that are said to encompass both female and male characteristics, Radke's sand sculptures evoke a similarly ambiguous gender. "I like the way any kind of figure moves-male or female," Radke said. "I try to encompass both male and female images in my work."

Radke's friend and fellow artist, choreographer Sarah Morrison, said she was inspired upon seeing his sand creations.

them were feminine creatures, with beautiful, curved sides," she said. "I knew I wanted to create a dance to go with his sculptures at the beach."

Since the Sirens were said to have been born from the muse of dancing, Terpischore the "Whirler," the collaboration was natural.

Rain or shine, Radke will begin doing his sculptures at about 6:00 pm. It takes him about 3 hours to complete a piece. As the sun sets, Morrison, along with two other core dancers, Kathy Kish and Amy Notley, will emerge, dancing on the rocks, in the sand, and in the water. They will be joined by singers from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Admission is free, and the suggested arrival time is 7:30 pm.

Morrison said she is excited about how the "live art" piece will impact over 1⁄2 of the audience that will be there at the beach not expecting to see art.

"What beach in the city needs something beautiful more than Edgewater?” Morrison asked. "It's the perfect spot. It's a way to hit everyone and to bring this art to a really large cross-section of people. We really don't know what to expect as far as people respecting our space. We will announce it, so people know it's going on. But we just want to encourage people to come to the beach as if this goes on at the beach every day."

Edgewater Park Beach can be reached from the park's east entrance, an exit off the Ohio 2 Shoreway just west of downtown.

Gólf analyst, fired for antilesbian remark, is back on TV

Ben Wright, suspended two years ago by CBS for sexist and anti-lesbian remarks about the Ladies Professional Golf Assn. tour, is returning to television in September to do commentary for a syndicated show. Wright will be a regular contributor to Golf 2000 with Peter Jacobsen, a half-hour show that made its debut June 6 and is broadcast to about 85 percent of the country.

"This is a way for him to get back into golf," said Jason Charles, executive producer of T.J. Sports Television Inc., which distributes the program.

In a two-minute segment called "Quite Wright," he will discuss leading topics and personalities of the game through commentary and analysis. His first segment is scheduled to air Sept. 14 from Cliffs Valley Golf Course in South Carolina, which Wright designed.

Wright's career as a CBS golf analyst ended in January of 1996, when the network suspended him over comments attrib-

uted to him by a Delaware newspaper during the 1995 LPGA championship.

He was quoted by the Wilmington News Journal as saying "lesbians in the sport hurt women's golf," and that women golfers are "handicapped by having boobs."

Wright initially said he was misquoted, and CBS stood by him. The network signed him to a four-year extension later that year but then suspended him two months later.

In May, however, Wright told Sports Illustrated he had indeed made the remarks and that CBS officials told him to deny it.

"I was so bloody stupid; stupid, naive and weak," he told SI in the May 18 edition of Golf Plus. "The most stupid thing I did was remain silent. I should have come out and said: 'Hey, I said all these dumb things, and they were wrong.'

Charles said the idea to bring Wright aboard was the idea of Frank Chirkinian, Jr., the director and producer of Golf 2000 who worked with Wright at CBS.

"I'm looking for all the publicity I can get on this show-good, bad or indifferent," Charles said. "My personal opinion was that Ben got a raw deal.”
